Project Description

Jackson performed the asbestos abatement, demolition, foundation removal, and site preparation for the redevelopment of the Burlington Town Center Mall, a landmark project located in the heart of downtown Burlington, Vermont. The work included demolition of approximately 205,000 square feet of the existing two-story shopping mall and a five-story, 200,000-square-foot structural steel parking garage.

Located in a densely developed urban environment, the project required extensive planning, carefully coordinated logistics, and rigorous environmental controls to safely execute demolition while protecting adjacent buildings, businesses, pedestrian traffic, and public infrastructure. Jackson mechanically separated the demolition area from portions of the mall that remained in service, allowing redevelopment activities to proceed without impacting retained structures.

Concrete and masonry generated during demolition were processed and reused onsite as engineered backfill, supporting the project’s sustainability objectives and contributing to its LEED certification. The project was completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with an aggressive redevelopment schedule that transformed a prominent downtown city block into the next phase of Burlington’s mixed-use CityPlace redevelopment.

This project highlights Jackson’s expertise in executing complex demolition projects within active urban environments where logistics, public safety, and protection of adjacent structures are paramount. It also demonstrates our ability to successfully phase demolition, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and deliver technically challenging projects while supporting aggressive redevelopment schedules.
