Project Description

Jackson was contracted by the owner to carry out the decommissioning, dismantlement and removal of the entire 250-acre industrial facility to allow for repurposing of the site. Structural demolition was performed on specified buildings, warehouses and complex buildings that contained paper machines, finishing machines, pulp dryers, tanks, digesters, piping, concrete structures, and electrical equipment.

The support service areas included a lime kiln and caustic plant, a tall oil fractionating plant, power and recovery boilers, turbine buildings, cooling towers, plenums and stacks, including 330 ft. concrete chimneys. A wood yard with conveyors, cranes, truck dumps, de-barker and chipper machines were also included in the demolition at this facility. The on-site power infrastructure included six (6) combination, recovery, and power boilers and steam turbine generators throughout two boiler house facilities, and two (2) – 335’ stacks, and four (4) – 200’ to 250’ stacks. The energized demolition and implosion sequences were conducted in two separate phases in 2019. This project is the largest paper mill demolition ever performed in the United States. Jackson performed over 169,000 hours worked with zero safety incidents.
