Project Description
A full team of machine operators, laborers, safety personnel and equipment mobilized and on stand-by as the fire was extinguished. Jackson was initially under instruction from the Mayor’s office to co-operate and assist federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Violent Crimes Division, and the Schenectady Fire Department in the search and rescue operation and throughout the time that the site was an active crime and fire investigation scene. Deconstruction was authorized to be performed with asbestos in place. When the site was officially released to JDS to commence demolition work, 24-hour security was maintained and regulated areas, air-monitoring procedures and safe working practices established in strict compliance with all applicable federal, state and OSHA asbestos management rules and regulations. The Jackson CAT 330BL Ultra High Demolition (UHD) excavator was employed to carry out a strategic tier-by-tier demolition. The weight was taken off the upper floors and the buildings then unstacked with a rotating grapple. Precision operating allowed for debris and brick to be simultaneously separated as the buildings were taken down. A spotter located in a man lift raised 80ft above ground, worked with the UHD operator to continually survey the buildings’ reactions to their progressive dismantlement, and the work plan was revised accordingly.
