Project Description

The Ossining Market Street Substation Demolition project consisted of the demolition and debris removal of a 4-Story cast-in-place concrete substation building. The project was in an urban setting in Ossining, NY, just north of New York City. Jackson Demolition Service, Inc. (Jackson) was responsible for building demolition, debris removal and disposal, and backfill of the project.

Prior to demolition, XRF testing was performed to identify the presence of lead-based paint along with sampling of stained concrete to determine if there were any PCB contaminants in the concrete. The vast majority of the building was found to have no contaminants present and the client remediated two small areas of contamination prior to demolition. After determining that the concrete debris was not contaminated, Jackson then submitted a project disposal plan to the client for approval. After approval, Jackson teamed with a local recycling facility, from the owners approved vendor list, for the disposal of the concrete debris. All the concrete had to be down-sized to 1’-0” by 1’-0” pieces, with no rebar protruding. Jackson was responsible for obtaining and submitting all of the haulers NYS DEC 364 registration paperwork to ensure the debris was hauled legally.

Additionally, TCLP testing was performed periodically to confirm that the was stream contained no contaminants.

Jackson demolished, downsized, and recycled 6,000 tons of concrete debris on the Ossining project. After the material was transported to the recycling facility, it was crushed to a 2” minus – Type II subbase and was used in road construction on local projects in the Upstate/Hudson Valley region.
