Project Description
The plant, located on a 213-acre site along the Coosa River, began operations in 1913 as Alabama Power’s first facility, Plant Gadsden. It initially generated 10,000 kilowatt-hours, making it the largest power generation facility in the state at the time. In 1949, a new steam plant was added, featuring two units capable of burning either coal or natural gas, each producing 60,000 kWh. The original plant operated until 1952 and was demolished in 1964. In 1995, the plant began supplying steam to the nearby Goodyear-Gadsden Tire Plant, maintaining this partnership until Goodyear’s closure in 2020. Following this, Alabama Power decided to retire Plant Gadsden to focus on providing reliable, cost-effective electricity. The plant was officially decommissioned on January 1, 2023. Alabama Power contracted Jackson Demolition for the plant's demolition, starting with extensive asbestos abatement in the Power House and surrounding buildings. While this work was underway, Jackson removed outer support structures but kept the wastewater processing facility intact until the project’s completion. Inside the power block, electrostatic precipitators were removed, and selective demolition allowed for the construction of a temporary ramp into the basement. Turbines, generators, and the lower sections of the boilers were dismantled, with the boilers and stack being explosively felled in one sequence. Over 90% of scrap, debris, and concrete were recycled. The project also included the removal of asbestos-containing underground piping, the demolition of small structures in the active switchyard, and the regrading of abandoned rail and truck unloading areas. Over the course of nearly 12 months, the project achieved more than 60,000 safe work hours.
